In the list below, the “Song Type” lists the language of the song if the original is not in English, otherwise it lists the song type — e.g. Ballad, Chanty, Lyric (meaning a song with no coherent story). Most songs, unless they are used for a specific purpose (such as a chanty or a dance tune) are classified as a Ballad or a Lyric. A ballad is a story; a lyric is one which does not. Obviously the boundaries are sometimes fuzzy.
